About teaching expand_more
post here.
My aim as a tutor is to create in my students a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions and being able to tackle new and unfamiliar problems. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning happens in an environment of mutual respect in which the student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. My experience has been that one-to-one personal tuition has a unique value to students because of the ability to resolve the students’ personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.
My approach varies depending on the student’s needs and learning style. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don’t lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students’ homework for them!
I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the student’s understanding and technique. I also give a lot of emphasis to some of the less obvious but vital skills such as essay structure and technique, logical thought, and the effective use of numbers and graphs.
I believe passionately in the huge value of tutoring to students and take great satisfaction in seeing my students achieve their full potential.
Inspire and Influence.
Improvement and Learning.
Work Satisfaction.
Respect.
Potential for Growth.
1.Inspire and Influence
As mentioned, teachers have the added responsibility of shaping future generations. More often than not students look up to teachers and get inspired by the things that they say and do. Teachers have an opportunity to make a difference. As a teacher, you will have the unique opportunity to steer a mass in the right direction. This need not be huge things. You can teach them to be responsible and sensible citizens. For instance, you can throw light on things that matter such as climate change, marine life, and likewise.
2.Improvement and Learning
Teaching and learning go hand in hand. Since you will be around young, curious, minds all day, you will be able to push yourself and get better every day. With the numerous changes in the education sector and in the subjects that you teach, you will be urged to keep yourself updated and that is a great thing. When you are in an environment that asks a lot of questions and is inquisitive, you grow and develop each day. You get to polish your skills and techniques. For instance, teachers across the globe are familiar with online teaching now. It is the sudden development that urges teachers to upskill themselves. There are a lot of teaching blogs that help teachers to upskill and polish themselves.
3.Work Satisfaction
The joy of making a difference and making a change in the right direction is like no other. Teaching provides job satisfaction that is like no other. Every child is different and like we always say, teachers have to use different teaching strategies and techniques to cater to each kid, and when you convey a difficult concept and the students understand it, you get a rush of joy like no other.
4.Respect
Teaching is a respectful job and people look up to teachers for the work that they do and the influence they have. Teaching is a noble profession. Teachers look at all students alike regardless of their academic performance and grades. They guide and direct students and as mentioned previously, they inspire and shape future generations.
5.Potential for Growth
The stability and job security of a teaching career are high. There is always potential for growth. It is a clear career path with a lot of opportunities. The potential that teachers have is commendable and the possibilities of teaching are vast. With online teaching apps and virtual classrooms on the rise, you can teach from the comfort of your home and without any geographical restrictions.
Remarkable Student Progress
Demonstrating your ability to motivate and encourage students to progress in their studies is an excellent way to show your commitment, enthusiasm and skill in the role. Whether you have transitioned students several grades higher than predicted, or your whole class achieved outstanding exam results; the progress your students make should be an excellent metric that you can use to give your CV a boost.
Additional Responsibilities
Your CV shouldn’t just show what a fantastic teacher you are but what you can bring to the school as a whole. Taking on additional responsibilities as a teacher shows your time management skills as well as your caring approach and focus on improvements. From setting up successful afterschool clubs, volunteering as a school representative for community events and organising trips, shows and leading year groups or departments, you can make your CV shine and prove that you add value both in and outside of the classroom
Supporting SEN Students
After recent concerns about SEN students with over 19,000 students dropping off school rolls in a single year and 30% of those having special educational needs and disabilities, it has never been more crucial to show how you support SEN students in your role.
From innovation in lessons or inclusion in activities, the way you support SEN students in your class or school can be a fantastic skill for your CV and an impressive achievement that you can demonstrate through the progress and of your SEN students.
Exam Results
For all schools, exam results are still an essential measure for teachers, and this could be a chance for your CV to shine when you make your exam results tangible on your CV. Instead of saying ‘many’ children achieved higher than their predicted grade, use the numbers to make your achievement more notable. For example, 30% of your students performed better than their predicted result or 97% achieved their predicted grade or above in your GCSE class.
Ofsted Reports
Ofsted reports are still a crucial indicator of your performance as a teacher and the school as a whole. If you have a recent observation report, it may be worthwhile including a positive quote from the Ofsted inspector to demonstrate your achievements in the workplace. If an inspector didn’t observe your class specifically, then there may be other aspects to include such as the commendation for the afterschool class or revision sessions you run.
When crafting your CV for a prospective role, consider the fact that many similar-looking applications will be landing on the recruiter’s desk. Use your achievements to make your CV stand out and ensure that you are a memorable candidate.
